ADHD Therapy

How to find an ADHD therapist:

I recommend using therapists or coaches from the ADHD uk marketplace as they check the credentials of their therapists and/ or coaches. These are the sorts of things I would check:

  • Wtraining they have in therapy as a whole and

  • In tailoring that therapy to people with ADHD.

  • Are they more than just a person with ADHD who has decided to ‘coach’ others without appropriate qualifications?

  • Are they trained in evidence based approaches like CBT for ADHD?

  • What other approaches could they draw from if that one wasn’t right for you?

  • Are they trauma therapy trained? (Trauma symptoms hugely increase ADHD symptoms, so processing trauma can be a fast and effective way of seeing a huge improvement in a lot of ADHD challenges)

  • What experience do they have in working with ADHD and what differences did people notice at the end of therapy with them?

  • Do they understand ADHD and executive dysfunction?

  • Have they had specific training in it?

  • How do they support people with executive functioning challenges?

  • Are they registered with a professional body? (This helps with quality assurance and gives you someone to complain to, if you work with them and realise that they have made false claims)

Remember you will need less sessions with the right person, so sometimes a more expensive therapist or coach (if the right one) is cheaper overall. This is why I chose a more expensive ADHD coach with my access to work budget.

ADHD Coaching and

Coping Skills Training

ADHD Coaching a natural way of adapting to life with ADHD and improving your quality of life. It can be used instead of, or in addition to medication. Many people benefit from ADHD Coaching and/or coping skills training after an ADHD diagnosis, which is why Access to Work fund both of these types of support.

As a trained coach and ADHD coach in addition to my Clinical Psychology training, I provide ADHD Coaching and/or coping skills training using a range of evidence based strategies, which is always bespoke to your needs.

ADHD Coaching and Coping skills training may involve:

  • Emotionally making sense of your ADHD diagnosis

  • Understanding ADHD and considering how ADHD has impacted on you across your life

  • Discussing how to reduce the challenges ADHD causes you

  • Learning strategies to improve: executive functioning; coping skills; communication skills; emotional regulation and/or productivity.

  • Maximising on your strengths

  • Overcoming imposter syndrome

  • Putting systems in place and/or adapting your environment to optimise functioning

  • Thinking about how to implement reasonable adjustments

  • Helping others around you to understand your ADHD and how they can best support you (personally and/or professionally)

  • Executive coaching for Senior Leaders

  • Business coaching for ADHD entrepreneurs

  • Supporting your application for access to work (where relevant)

  • Therapy specifically tailored for adults with ADHD, including EMDR (trauma therapy) is also beneficial if you have had difficult life events that are compounding ADHD symptoms.

Funding

I accept Access to Work funding for both ADHD coaching and Coping Skills training. You can also self fund sessions.

Information about medication:
I am a Clinical Psychologist trained to provide adult ADHD assessments and ADHD Coaching. I am not a medication prescriber. Consequently, if you receive an ADHD diagnosis and later decide that you would like to try a medication as part of your treatment plan, then you would need to consult separately with a prescriber to do this. I will advise you on how to find an NHS or private prescriber, in ADHD assessment reports and this can be discussed in ADHD coaching.

"Can I get therapy for my Adult ADHD on the NHS?"

Unfortunately it seem like the answer is no, I'm not aware of any NHS providers offering ADHD Coaching after diagnosis.
